Uintah Basin Water Summit explores local supply

Presenters covered topics ranging from the snowpack survey and how it will impact the water supply to using drones in agriculture when some of the region’s top experts gathered for the 2023 Uintah Basin Water Summit last week at the Grace Events Center in Roosevelt.

State representatives Scott Chew and Christine Watkins, state senator Ron Winterton were all on hand to talk about legislative updates.

Before the Dutch Oven lunch, catered by Grab ‘n Growl and sponsored by Franson Civil Engineers, the Golden Shovel Awards were presented to deserving members of the community. The Golden Shovel Award is a lifetime achievement award for those who have worked in the water industry. The first Golden Shovel Awards were given in 1994.

This year’s honorees were Boyd Kitchen, Clyde Watkins, Shane Frost, Glen Durfey and Lesa Asay. Each one has spent most of their careers working together with many others to make the water flow in the Basin.

From canal projects and irrigation systems that reduce water loss, they have all gone the extra mile for their communities.
