Union swept the Region 14 swimming team titles behind a number of individual champions in Ephraim Jan. 27.
The Cougars rolled up 619 points to outlast the six-team field. Millard (420 points) and North Sanpete (204) finished in the next two spots.
In the girls team standings, the Lady Cougars registered 517 points. Millard (440 points) and Manti (257) finished second and third, respectively.
“It was awesome to sweep the team titles and it’s always fun to be able to do that,” Union coach Justin Schmitt said. “This will help build the confidence for our swimmers before we go into the state meet.”
Schmitt said Millard pushed his swimmers in some of the events.
“Millard always do a great job in dropping time,” he added. “Their coach has really put together a good program there. This year things just fell in our way in a couple of races that we were able to outperform Millard in.”
The win makes it back-to-back region championships for the Lady Cougars. The Union boys have won three years in a row.
“I like the tradition that we are building,” Schmitt said. “We go into the region meet expecting to win.”
Union’s Boston Bennett led the way for his team when he won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
Stetson Batty also won a pair of region titles in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Cameron Goss (100-yard butterfly) and Zack Wood (500-yard freestyle) brought home individual titles.
For the Lady Cougars, Sienna Scholes captured region titles in the 500-yard and the 200-yard freestyle.
Scholes’ teammate, Abbey Burnham, won the 100-yard freestyle.
The Class 3A state swim meet is planned for Brigham Young University in Provo Feb. 10-11.
