Mary Harper grew up dancing and participating with the Powerhouse Dance Studio in Vernal.Two years ago, Harper decided to join the Uintah High School cheerleading program to provide a new challenge for herself.It didn’t take Harper long before she became one of the best at pumping up the crowds at different sporting events.“I did dance for the first part of my life and I really loved it,” Harper said.
Duchesne’s Kira Grant knocked home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a base for a thrilling 1-0 win over South Summit.
Union coach Eldon Brough used his first year at the helm of the program to implement his style of play.The Cougars, who now have a year under his belt, have jumped out the season with an impressive 2-0 start.Union blasted Utah Military Academy 9-1 in the season opener.
Vernal scored four unanswered goals in the third period to secure a 6-2 win over Seattle to clinch the United States Premier Hockey League Northwest Division title.The victory capped off a 2-1 playoff series victory against the Totems at the Uintah County Western Park Ice Rink.The teams played a best two out of three series format.It’s the second straight divisional title for the Oilers.“I think that it means a lot to the organization and even more to the town of Vernal,” Vernal coach Ryan Howse said.
It seems after every baseball season, the Union Cougars lose a plethora of talented, successful players to graduation.Last spring wasn’t any different.The Cougars hope to reload quickly to be right in the mix of things come postseason.“We are extremely excited about the baseball team,” Union coach Matt Labrum said.
Tabiona settled for a respectful third-place finish in the Class 1A state boys basketball tournament at Richfield.

Union’s Justin Schmitt was surprised when he was named the Coach of the Year for Class 3A swimming.The award was announced after the state meet at Brigham Young University, in Orem.“It was a really great honor,” Schmitt said.
