Residents of Vernal are being warned about a sophisticated scam involving individuals posing as local law enforcement officers and demanding money for bail. The Vernal Police Department has received numerous complaints about these fraudulent activities, prompting an urgent alert to the community.
These scammers use various tactics to make their schemes appear legitimate, including using names of local officers, which they have likely found online. They often use spoofing technology to mimic local phone numbers, making it seem as if the calls are coming from legitimate sources. Some may even create fake officer badges or send fraudulent documents via email or text to further deceive their victims.
The Vernal Police Department emphasized that its officers will never call and demand money from citizens.
“Our community needs to be aware that these scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated,” said a police department spokesperson. “It’s crucial that everyone remains vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited calls asking for money.”
The police department advises anyone who receives suspicious phone calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers to take the following steps:
Do not give out personal information. Avoid sharing any personal or financial information over the phone. Verify the call. Confirm the legitimacy of the call in person by visiting the local police department or by calling dispatch at 435-789-4222. Finally, hang up and report. If you receive a call demanding money, hang up immediately and report the incident using the online tool at IC3.gov.
The Vernal Police Department also encourages residents to spread the word about this scam to friends, family, and neighbors to help prevent others from falling victim.
For those concerned about the authenticity of a call from law enforcement, visiting the local police department or calling the official dispatch number is the safest way to confirm any communication.
As scams become increasingly more elaborate, the importance of community awareness and vigilance cannot be overstated. By staying informed and cautious, residents can protect themselves and their loved ones from falling prey to these malicious schemes.
For more information or assistance, residents are urged to contact the Vernal Police Department directly. Remember to stay safe and alert to protect yourself and the community against these types of scams.
